چکیده

The combination of Hydrological Models and high-resolution Satellite Precipitation Products (SPPs) or regional Climatological (RCMs), has provided the means to establish baselines for quantification, propagation, reduction in hydrological uncertainty when generating streamflow forecasts. This study aimed improve operational real-time forecasts Upper Zambezi River Basin (UZRB), Africa, utilizing novel Variational Ensemble Forecasting (VEF) approach. In this regard, we describe discuss main steps required implement, calibrate, validate an hydrologic forecasting system (HFS) using VEF Hydrologic Processing Strategies (HPS). HFS was constructed monitor daily forecast them up eight days future. process called short- medium-range (SR2MR) implemented rainfall data from three SPPs (The TRMM Multisatellite Analysis TMPA-RT, NOAA CPC Morphing Technique CMORPH, Estimation Remotely Sensed Artificial Neural Networks, PERSIANN) Global System (GFS). preprocessing (HPR) strategy considered all raw bias corrected estimates calibrate distributed models (HYMOD_DS, HBV_DS, VIC 4.2.b). processing (HP) optimal parameter sets estimated during calibration increase number ensembles available forecasting. Finally, inference-based approaches were evaluated application a postprocessing (HPP) strategy. final evaluation multiple sources, i.e., precipitation products, models, sets, significantly achieved through fully implementation combined with several HPS. challenges opportunities associated SR2MR are discussed.

Real-Time Data Assimilation for Operational Ensemble Streamflow Forecasting

Operational flood forecasting requires that accurate estimates of the uncertainty associated with modelgenerated streamflow forecasts be provided along with the probable flow levels. This paper demonstrates a stochastic ensemble implementation of the Sacramento model used routinely by the National Weather Service for deterministic streamflow forecasting. The approach, the simultaneous optimizat...

Effective Mesoscale, Short-Range Ensemble Forecasting

This study developed and evaluated a short-range ensemble forecasting (SREF) system with the goal of producing useful, mesoscale forecast probability (FP). Real-time, 0 to 48-h SREF predictions were produced and analyzed for 129 cases over the Pacific Northwest. Eight analyses from different operational forecast centers were used as initial conditions (ICs) for running the Fifth-Generation Penn...

A Technique for Incorporating Large-Scale Climate Information in Basin-Scale Ensemble Streamflow Forecasts

Water managers throughout the Western U.S. depend on seasonal forecasts to assist with operations and planning. In this study, we develop a seasonal forecasting model to aid water resources decision-making in the Truckee-Carson River System. We analyze large-scale climate information that has a direct impact on our basin of interest to develop predictors to spring runoff. The predictors are sno...

Uncertainty assessment via Bayesian revision of ensemble streamflow predictions in the operational river Rhine forecasting system

[1] Ensemble streamflow forecasts obtained by using hydrological models with ensemble weather products are becoming more frequent in operational flow forecasting. The uncertainty of the ensemble forecast needs to be assessed for these products to become useful in forecasting operations. A comprehensive framework for Bayesian revision has been recently developed and applied to operational flood ...

Environmental policy and management of freshwater resources in the Haraz-Ghareh Su Basin in comparison to other Caspian sub basins

Haraz-Ghareh Su is one of the seven sub-basins of the Caspian basin, located on the southern shores of the Caspian Sea, and as such, is in danger of water crisis due to absence of proper systematic policy and strategy. In this study, the pressure factors on the Haraz-Ghareh Su water resources were identified using DPSIR model. Then, the pressure parameters on the freshwater resources in the Cas...
